The legendary sunsets in the Ruhr region have bathed the cities in a glistening, dark red light since the years of the “economic miracle”. The main reason for this was sulphur dioxide in the air. The air pollution was so high that the population suffered from numerous respiratory diseases. Screenwriter Wolfgang Menge and director Wolfgang Petersen took the situation as the starting point for their pseudo-documentary feature film SMOG in 1973.
