Tony Cokes

Tony Cokes (*1956, Virgina, USA) works with video, installation, print and sound. He places text in other contexts and thus reflects on capitalism, subjective perceptions, knowledge transfer and (visual) stimuli. At the same time, Cokes uses sound as an essential and intertextual element that adds complexity to the minimal aesthetics of the visuals. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Tate Modern, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum, New York; ZKM, Karlsruhe; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Schinkel Pavilion, Berlin; ICA, Philadelphia; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Bergen Kunsthall; and La Cinémathèque Française. Cokes has shown his work at festivals such as Berlin Biennale X, Rotterdam International Film Festival, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid, Sonic Acts, Amsterdam and the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. Cokes is Professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University, USA.
