Stefan Marx

Stefan Marx is an artist and drawer. He has developed designs for various companies, designed the artwork for album covers and fanzines, as well as developing a decor for Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur, the porcelain manufacturer. His drawings are often created spontaneously while travelling – at the airport, on the train or in a café. He records his observations in imagery as well as typographically capturing statements and quotes from songs or everyday conversations. The resulting, often humorous work, which is informed by a DIY aesthetic rather than any kind of perfectionism, is in the meantime being in exhibited in art galleries and institutions. The Wandersalon series of events organised by Urbane Künste Ruhr is being accompanied by Stefan Marx’s drawings of a nomadic spider. For Ruhr Ding, Marx is creating various black and white murals on facades that are located in each city involved in Ruhr Ding: Territorien. Stefan Marx [born 1979] lives in Berlin.

Another Weekend

Another Weekend is emblazoned in large letters on the facade of a house in Dortmund – a reference to the song of the same name by the American singer-songwriter Ariel Pink.

I love you lots more than you know

Marx’s murals are in some ways reminiscent of the dust-soiled windows and the black façades of buildings in the past, bearing immortal lines – as if written by fingers in soot.

Referencing Woody Guthrie’s soundtrack, Essen’s wall honours the little man’s everyday life and his search for a better future.

His large murals, in which he often captures everyday observations pictorially and typographically, have even long since become part of Ruhr culture.
