For the 2019/2020 edition, the focus was on artists whose work deals with ‘climate’ in the broadest sense, the thematic bracket of Ruhr Ding 2021.

The twelve-month residencies were awarded to the artist Euridice Kala (France/Mozambique) and the photographer Mohamed Altoum (Sudan). Altoum was already a scholarship holder of Zu Gast bei Urbane Künste Ruhr the previous year. Both residencies were linked to the joint Silent University Ruhr project launched in 2015 by Ringlokschuppen Ruhr in Mülheim a. d. Ruhr and Urbane Künste Ruhr.

The three-month residencies were linked to KunstVereineRuhr. From July to September 2019, Nastassja Simensky from England and the Japanese-German duo Kyoco and Nico Alexander Taniyamaan came to the Ruhr region. From October to December 2019, Ana Alenso from Venezuela and Marianna Christofides from Cyprus were guests. From January to March 2020, Angharad Williams from Wales and Etienne Dietzel from Germany were at home in the Ruhr region. Jackie Karuti and Thomas Taube came to the Ruhr region from April to June 2020.

Stefan Marx

Auf den Vorhängen des Tourwagens ist rege Geselligkeit zu entdecken: To-Go-Becher unter sich oder Baustellenhütchen und Eistüten im Gespräch. Zwei gut gelaunte Freund*innen in einem einladenden Büdchen im Schatten der Bäume. Pudel und Kickroller, die sich ineinander kringeln.  

Kunst im öffentlichen Raum beginnt bei Marx mit dem genauen Hinschauen: Seine Zeichnungen entstehen immer spontan und unterwegs – am Flughafen, im Zug, im Café. Dabei sind Stefan Marx’ Szenen humorvoll, melancholisch, und weit entfernt von einer perfekten Wiedergabe, dafür nah an der Stadt und ihren Bewohner*innen. Als Künstler und Zeichner unterwandert er auch in anderen Kontexten die Grenzen zwischen freier Kunst, Gebrauchsgrafik und Alltagskultur konsequent: Er zeichnete die laufende Zitrone für eine bekannte Skate-Marke, für die königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur und verschiedene Modellabels, gestaltete Plattencover und T-Shirts. Neben zahlreichen Fanzines und Künstlerbüchern entstanden auch Hefte für Kinder und Erwachsene, die ausgemalt werden können. 

Stefan Marx war bereits mehrfach bei Urbane Künste Ruhr zu Gast, unter anderem zeichnete er 2018 für die Veranstaltungsserie Wandersalon die Wanderspinne, die mit ihren langen Armen alle Orte im Ruhrgebiet miteinander vernetzt. Nun reisen seine auf dem Dortmunder Nordmarkt entstandenen Zeichnungen als Malbuch mit, als Vorhänge rahmen sie andere Ausblicke, andere Szenen, andere Städte. Was Stefan Marx zeichnet, ist nie abgeschlossen – es wartet immer auf einen nächsten Moment, der dazukommt.

Stefan Marx is an artist and illustrator. He develops designs for various companies, creates the artwork for record covers and fanzines, but has also developed a design for the Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur.
