The Antwerp Altar in the Ev. Stadtkirche Sankt Petri - Altar Transformation

In Christian churches, an altarpiece is typically a decorative screen or structure placed in front of or on top of the altar. The so-called Golden Miracle in the Ev. Stadtkirche Sankt Petri (St. Peter's Church) in Dortmund is an impressive example of this, decorated on both sides and capable of being folded open. It is located in the choir and is protected behind a glass screen. Unlike museum displays, however, this altarpiece is unfolded several times a year for various occasions. During the summer months, the gold side is hidden behind the painted side. As part of an upcoming event, the 'festive side' will be revealed once more. Dr Niklas Gliesmann, a research fellow in the Department of Art and Art History at TU Dortmund University, will discuss the materials, craftsmanship and iconography of the Golden Miracle. This event offers participants an insight into how this more than half a millennium old altarpiece is still relevant today.

The Grand Snail Tour will be accompanied by literary, photographic and illustrative artists, who will collect impressions and reflections from the same city at the same time as the Trailer is there and put them into visual or literary form. The result is a paratext on the three-year tour, a travel chronicle in the form of a kaleidoscope of stories, connections and snapshots in the 53 cities of the region, revealing the simultaneities and non-simultaneities of the Grand Snail Tour.
