In Joanna Piotrowska’s artworks, which are departing from the medium of black-and-white photography, she creates precise, psychologically charged social landscapes that often unfold in domestic settings and staged environments. She explores unconscious actions and personal forms of expression, memory and intimacy in family relations as well as the materiality and corporeality of interpersonal and psychological dynamics. In her more recent practice, Piotrowska has explored the unconscious in C. G. Jung’s psychoanalysis through large, multi-layered, photographic collages – some of which show pictures from her own family archive. These works elude an overarching narrative and are inspired by the logic of dreams.
