Schlafzimmer und Schlafstädte

How can the infrastructure of an environment – a flat, a street, a neighbourhood, a city – reveal the lifestyles of its inhabitants? Or rather, which supposed stereotypical needs are inscribed in built spaces? After a short introduction by Britta Peters focusing on the question of how architecture sets the rhythm of everyday life and organises the separation of private and public spheres, Alicja Rogalska presents her project Sister Flats. The installation for a flat was created in 2022 in cooperation with Urbane Künste Ruhr for Manifesta 14 in Prishtina and will be continued with Ruhr Ding: Schlaf in Essen-Steele. It also addresses the ambivalent role of private living space between personal freedom, for example in the sense of Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own, and restriction. For the structure of a flat within a house, a city, not only reflects the social and economic conditions of a society, but can also turn from a shelter into a place of violence to which its inhabitants are at the mercy. The home can become an uncanny place.
