Erde, jenes unterschätzte Material, aus dem unsere Weltw ächst, dringt bis in die hintersten Ecken eines geschichtsträchtigen Gebäudes in der Essener Innenstadt. Mit Absorption zeigt Urbane Künste Ruhr eine Installation des US-amerikanischen Künstlers Asad Raza von großer sinnlicher und poetischer Kraft, die das gesamte Erdgeschoss des denkmalgeschützten, ehemaligen Allbauhauses am Pferdemarkt einnimmt.
Erde entsteht als Gemisch aus Sand, Lehm und Kompostanteilen. Diese Basis wird im Vorfeld und während der Ausstellungslaufzeit mit organischer und anorganischer Materie versetzt, die durch Bearbeitung und Kompostierung zu neuer Erde – von Raza „Neosoil“ genannt – verarbeitet wird. Im gesamten Zeitraum der Ausstellung ist außerdem ein Team von „Cultivators“ (Kultivator*innen), vor Ort, das unter wissenschaftlicher Begleitung die Erde ständig filtert, in ihre Bestandteile zerlegt, analysiert und neu zusammen mischt. Die in der Region gesammelten Bestandteile, wie Klärschlamm, Altpapier oder Haare, reichern die Erde an, während der Ausstellungslaufzeit wird sie als fruchtbarer Boden an Besucher*innen, Kleingartenvereine und soziale Einrichtungen verschenkt.
Auf Einladung von Asad Raza fügen neben der Klangarbeit Ten Years Alive on the Infinite Plain von Tony Conrad die Künstler*innen Maria Renee Morales Garcia und Agatha Gothe-Snape dem Prozess skulpturale und performative Spannungsmomente hinzu. Frühere Varianten von Absorption wurden beim Kaldor Public Art Project (Sydney, 2019) und im Gropius Bau (Berlin, 2020) gezeigt.

It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Essen main station, and public transport lines 107 and 108 of the Ruhrbahn will take you to the Allbauhaus, Viehofer Platz stop.

Neosoil für Bochum
On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the city of Bochum, parts of the new soil, called “Neosoil”, is being donated by the “Cultivators” to the Botanical Garden of the Ruhr University Bochum. In the conversation, they report on their treatment of the soil, which has absorbed both organic and inorganic matter from the region. While the Botanical Garden houses also non-regional plants — often for research purposes — the soil cultivated in Raza’s project brings parts of the Ruhr region and its history into the garden. The soil’s transfer to the Botanical Garden invites us to exoticise the ubiquitous material and to exceed the discussion about ecological cycles of decay and formation.

Artist Talk with Asad Raza
As part of Asad Raza’s project Absorption, a new earth is created from clay, sand, compost and other ingredients by means of continuous processing through so-called cultivators. This process is accompanied by Gerd Wessolek, former professor for soil protection at University of Technology, Berlin. The conversation with Britta Peters, artistic director of Urbane Künste Ruhr, focuses not only on the process-like dynamics and energy cycles of Absorption, but also on the special connection to the history of the Ruhr region and the venue in Essen’s city centre.
