Open Call for Residency

Urbane Künste Ruhr is pleased to announce a new cooperation with the Stiftung Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets in Bochum as part of the residency program Zu Gast bei Urbane Künste Ruhr.
Launched in 2018 under the artistic direction of Britta Peters, the residency program is conceived as a sustainable network project and is implemented together with several cooperation partners in the Ruhr area. International artists are given the opportunity to work in the Ruhr area for three or twelve months and to get to know the region.
The Stiftung Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets (Foundation for the History of the Ruhr), founded in 1998, promotes research into the history and present of the Ruhr area and provides extensive book and journal collections as well as numerous archival materials for this purpose. In the foundation's building - the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets - the Library of Ruhr History and the Archive in the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets are open to all interested parties. Through close cooperation with the Institute for Social Movements at the Ruhr University Bochum, students and scholars from various disciplines as well as mining experts and others interested in the holdings benefit regionally and nationally.

Residency period: October - December 2021
Application period: March 15th - April 30th, 2021

Who can apply?

The two residencies in cooperation with the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets are aimed at professionally working international and national artists whose artistic practice shows a reference to artistic research.

About the residency at the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets:

The residency at the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets offers the opportunity for intensive research of archival material and archival structures during a three-month stay.In addition to the option to explore general questions about the construction of archives and administrative structures, work at the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets is particularly suited to an examination of journals and ephemera of various international social movements since the 19th century. An extensive fund of early mining literature provides information about regional and national mining history. In addition, the records of Ruhr 2010 GmbH held in the Haus der Geschichte enable an examination of the procedures and infrastructures used in archiving both realized and unrealized exhibition projects. One question that arises, for example, is: How does artistic research or practice access the art of the past?

What the residency offers:

The residency is open-ended, individualized, and geared to the specific research interests and projects of the residents. It offers a three-month research stay in Bochum with content-related support from the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets and close ties to Urbane Künste Ruhr. An apartment is provided and the residency artists receive a monthly allowance of 750€. In addition, a ticket for public transportation will be provided. A prerequisite for participation in the residency program is that the residents spend at least 75 percent of their time on site in the Ruhr area.

Required documents:

Please submit your proposed work for the residency at the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets in a maximum two-page synopsis. Please also summarize your project in two sentences. In addition, we require a curriculum vitae as well as a portfolio or an overview of two to three significant projects.

Please send your application documents to: ard@urbanekuensteruhr.de.

Selection procedure and jury:

Through a jury process, two artists will be selected for the first cohort in 2021. Notifications will be sent from mid-June 2021.
