New artists for residency programme

Since 2018, Urbane Künste Ruhr has been inviting visual artists from Germany and abroad to work in the region as part of the supra-regional programme Zu Gast bei Urbane Künste Ruhr in cooperation with various other institutions active in the Ruhr region.

For the first time in 2021, the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets in Bochum and the Halfmannshof in Gelsenkirchen have opened their doors to artists who want to use the specific digital or content-related research possibilities for their work on site. Since the beginning of the programme, there has been cooperation with the KunstVereineRuhr, an association of various art associations and artists' houses in the region, as well as the Ringlokschuppen Ruhr and the Makroscope - Centre for Art and Technology in Mülheim an der Ruhr.

Urbane Künste Ruhr and the cooperation partners are pleased to have the artists Julia Lübbecke and Guy Königstein as residents since October as part of the cooperation with the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets and Yuki Jungesblut and David Reiber Otalora as part of the cooperation with KunstVereinenRuhr.

At the beginning of October, the jury meeting for the selection of the residents for 2022 took place. A jury consisting of Noor Mertens (Kunstmuseum Bochum), Rebekka Seubert (Dortmunder Kunstverein), Linda Schröer (Dortmunder Kunstverein), Jan Ehlen (Makroskope Mülheim), Johannes Büttner (artist) and Britta Peters (artistic director of Urbane Künste Ruhr) selected the following artists: Alina Schmuch, Jan Berger, Phillip Modersohn, Iris Ward Loughran, Marc Kokopeli, Nadja Abt for the three-month scholarships and Deniz Aktas and Haha Wang for the year-round scholarships in Mülheim.

Under the artistic direction of Britta Peters, Urbane Künste Ruhr initiates a residency programme for international artists in the Ruhr region. The residencies, which usually last three or twelve months, are initially awarded independently of concrete project proposals and enable the artists to get to know the region, to incorporate these experiences into their existing work or to develop new ideas from them. All candidates for the decentralised residency programme are selected through a proposal process or, in exceptional cases, through an open call for proposals.
